There are sustainable approaches that can be taken by brands, an example is ‘Mud Jeans’ a company which sources organic cotton which is made from natural materials, organic and recycled cotton which do not include pesticides, which makes the fabric better for the consumers skin and better for the manufacturers and growers health. They also consider a fair production policy by working which manufactures that ensure the wellbeing of everybody involved. Founded in 2012, Mud Jeans has become an exemplary circular fashion company and one of the worlds first B Corps. As denim is one of the most polluting items in fashion by using 7.000 litres of water and chemicals, whilst having over 200,000 million jeans being sold yearly, the impact of recycling jeans and using organic cotton can be huge.
Another example of a sustainable approach to denim production is the company ‘Recover’ which promotes turning waste textiles into sustainable, recycled fibres. They are a ‘leading materials science company and global producer of low impact, high quality recycled cotton fibre and fibre blends.’ The cotton they produce is recycled cotton fibre that is suitable for overdyeing by using minimal solvents and water. ‘28 million tonnes of clothing is disposed worldwide every year’ – source: a new textiles economy. 73% are landfilled or incinerated, 12% reused, 13% downcycled, <1% recycled into new clothes. This is known as the textile waste crisis which is increasing constantly. Recover see waste textiles as a circular solution to recycle the fabrics and create new sustainable fabrics which are less harmful to the environment.
The Higg Materials Sustainability Index (MSI) enables brands and manufacturers to measure and score the environmental impacts of materials used in creating textile products, compare their models to the rest of the industry to make better decisions about material use. Recover is dedicated to use and contribute to the Higg Index tools to enable the industry to understand the positive impacts of using Recover recycled cotton. Higg MSI also address the environmental and social performance of its facilities.
